Why is the national media so obsessed with ranking teams in April when they completely ignore the single biggest factor that determines a season: the schedule? Look at the way-too-early top 25 lists. They slot teams based on last year's results and recruiting rankings, but they treat every schedule like it's equal. It's a joke.
Take Texas Longhorns for 2026. The slate is brutal. You have to go on the road to face Georgia, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M. That's three of the most hostile environments in the sport, against teams that are consistently in the top 15 of these same rankings. Meanwhile, look at some of the other teams getting hype. Their road trips are to unranked opponents or they get their toughest games at home. The difference in difficulty is massive, maybe a two or three-loss swing.
How can you possibly compare teams without accounting for that? A 10-2 record against that gauntlet is more impressive than an 11-1 record against a soft slate. The metrics should reflect it, but they never do. The playoff committee claims to value strength of schedule, but the preseason chatter never sets that table correctly. everybody just looks at the brand name and the previous win total.
