The Apple Cup is dead and the people who killed it should be ashamed of what they've done to this sport. They talk about "best fits" for recruits now like they're picking a stock portfolio, not a school. I remember when that game meant something, when you had Ryan Leaf and Drew Bledsoe going toe-to-toe with those guys up north and the whole state stopped. Now it's just another non-conference game on the schedule, a sad footnote. The rivalry wasn't about brand deals or TV windows, it was about pride, and you can't put a price tag on that. Realignment tore the heart out of college football, and watching our kids have to schedule Washington as some meaningless exhibition is a disgrace. The 1997 game decided the Rose Bowl, now it decides nothing but bragging rights in a broken system.
