Just saw that ESPN offseason ranking and had to check where Texas landed in the turnover margin department because that has been the silent killer for the Longhorns the last two seasons. Texas finished 2025 ranked 67th nationally in turnover margin at minus-3 for the year. That number is unacceptable for a program with playoff aspirations and it directly cost them at least two games. The Georgia game where the Longhorns turned it over three times in the first half and the Arkansas game where a fumble inside the 10-yard line flipped the entire momentum. You cannot win consistently in the SEC when you are giving away possessions like candy on Halloween. The good news is the portal additions and returning personnel should help. The Longhorns brought in a veteran offensive line transfer who allowed zero sacks and only one pressure per 40 dropbacks last season per PFF. That alone should cut down on the strip sacks that plagued the offense in 2025. The secondary also returns more experience which typically leads to more interceptions. Texas has the talent to be a top-20 turnover margin team. The question is whether the coaching staff emphasizes ball security drills enough in fall camp or if they keep treating it like an afterthought. The difference between a 9-3 season and a CFP run is usually three or four turnovers. Texas needs to flip that margin by at least 10 spots nationally.
