Stop pretending special teams don't matter for Texas this fall because that's how you lose games you should win by 20. The Longhorns ranked 67th in punt return average last season and 81st in kickoff return defense. Those are numbers that get you beat by a disciplined team that actually values the third phase.
Everyone wants to talk about the QB battle and the new receivers but Sarkisian's teams have consistently been mediocre on special teams. Texas ranked 55th in net punting and gave up a blocked punt in a critical SEC game last year. You cannot win a conference title with that kind of performance.
The kicker situation alone should have fans nervous. Texas converted just 78% of field goals last season which ranked 62nd nationally. In a league where games come down to three points that's a liability.
Fall camp needs to be about more than just installing the offense. The Longhorns need a complete overhaul of their punt coverage units and kick return schemes. Texas has the athletes to be top 25 in special teams SP+ but they have to actually prioritize it in practice.
