Wait so the ESPN piece on the 21 five-star prospects in the 2027 class dropped and everybody is running wild with the recruiting rankings and the NIL projections and the highlight packages. But nobody is talking about what this actually means for the SEC pecking order right now. Texas finished 2025 ranked 3rd nationally in team talent composite and the Longhorns are sitting on a 2026 class that already has five-star QB Dia Bell and five-star Edge Richard Wesley locked in. Meanwhile the rest of the conference is scrambling through the portal trying to patch holes while Sarkisian is building from the high school ranks.
Georgia landed five-star TE Kaiden Prothro and that is a massive get for the Bulldogs. Kirby Smart has won two titles and they are always going to recruit at an elite level. But look at the roster churn in Athens. Georgia lost 11 starters to the NFL Draft and they are trying to replace that production with portal guys and underclassmen. The Bulldogs finished 2025 ranked 5th in SP+ but the gap between them and Texas in terms of returning production is significant. The Longhorns bring back more experience at key positions while Georgia is essentially rebuilding its front seven.
Texas A&M secured five-star CB Brandon Arrington which is a huge win for Mike Elko in College Station. The Aggies finished 2025 ranked 18th in defensive pass efficiency and adding a lockdown corner helps that number. But Texas A&M is still trying to figure out quarterback play and that is going to limit how high they can climb in the conference hierarchy. The Aggies ranked 67th in passing success rate last season and until that changes they are not a real threat to win the SEC.
Alabama used the portal aggressively to revamp its offensive line and that is smart given how much pressure the Tide gave up in 2025. But Kalen DeBoer is still installing his system and the SEC schedule does not get easier. Alabama finished 2025 ranked 4th in yards per play allowed on defense but they lost significant talent to the draft and the transfer portal. The Tide is in a transition period and expecting them to just reload like the Saban years is ignoring the data.
Oklahoma is bringing in 50 portal transfers under Eric Morris and that is either going to be a masterstroke or a disaster. The Sooners finished 2025 ranked 89th in offensive efficiency and you cannot fix that overnight with 50 new faces who have never practiced together. Chemistry matters and Oklahoma is essentially running a training camp in the spring while Texas has continuity in its system.
The SEC power structure right now has Texas and Georgia at the top with Alabama and LSU in the second tier and everybody else fighting for position. The Longhorns finished 2025 ranked 2nd in the SEC in yards per play differential and that was with a first year quarterback under center. Now with a year of experience in the offense and the 2026 recruiting class adding elite talent the trajectory is clear. Texas is not just c...
