Everybody pointing at Texas's turnover margin last season like it was just bad luck is missing the real story. The Longhorns finished 112th nationally in turnover margin in 2025. That is not a fluke, that is a systemic problem with how the offense protects the football and how the defense fails to create takeaways. You cannot win a national title giving the ball away that much, period.
The roster turnover this offseason gives Texas a chance to fix it, but the numbers are brutal. The Longhorns ranked 127th in fumbles lost and 98th in interceptions thrown. Meanwhile the defense generated only 15 takeaways all season, which ranked 105th nationally. That is a -11 turnover margin in a season where they finished 10-3. Imagine what this team could have done with even an average turnover margin.
Until the coaching staff proves they can fix the ball security issues and the defense shows it can generate more than one takeaway per game, Texas is capped. The 2026 recruiting class is great and ...
