People keep pointing at Texas sitting at No. 6 in the 2026 recruiting rankings and calling it a "down year" but that completely misses what this staff is doing. The Longhorns have a 5-star QB and a 5-star edge already locked in, and the average prospect rating is still higher than most of the top 5 classes. The difference is Texas is being selective. They aren't taking 25 guys just to pad the numbers. They're targeting specific needs and going after elite fits.
Look at the actual roster construction. Texas already has the talent base from the last two cycles. What they need now is to plug holes, NOT overhaul the roster. Taking a smaller class of higher-rated guys who fit the scheme is smarter than grabbing a bunch of bodies. The 2027 class is where the real fireworks happen anyway, and the staff has already laid the groundwork. No. 6 with this kind of selectivity is actually impressive, not disappointing.
