Just read that ESPN breakdown of the 21 five-star kids in the 2027 class and I keep circling back to the same thing for Texas. The Longhorns already have a top-5 class locked up for 2026 with Dia Bell and Richard Wesley, but the real playoff projection depends on whether that 2026 haul translates to the field immediately. Texas finished 2025 ranked 37th in yards per play allowed on defense, and that has to improve for any CFP path to open up.
The SEC schedule is brutal but the roster construction is there. The question nobody wants to answer is whether the new QB room can hit the 65% completion mark consistently after losing the starter to the draft. The Longhorns ranked 14th in QBR in 2025 but that was with a veteran under center. The 2026 CFP picture depends entirely on how fast the young talent matures. Oregon and Georgia are the clear favorites on paper but Texas has the schedule and the portal flexibility to make a run if the offensive line gels this spring.
