Everyone talking about Joey McGuire calling out Sarkisian and offering to play Texas in Week 1 is completely missing the point. The real story here is that Texas Tech's special teams units have been a disaster zone for two straight seasons and nobody wants to admit it. Texas ranked 12th nationally in punt return EPA last season while the Red Raiders finished outside the top 60 in kickoff coverage efficiency. McGuire wants to run his mouth about scheduling but his own roster can't even field a punt without giving up hidden yardage. The gap between these two programs in the third phase of the game is massive and it's not getting talked about. Texas has consistently invested in special teams analytics under Sarkisian and it shows in the numbers. The Longhorns finished top 25 in net punting average and didn't allow a single punt return touchdown last season. Meanwhile Texas Tech gave up two special teams scores and ranked 94th in punt return defense. That's not a rivalry that's a mismatch. McGuire should be focusing on fixing his own kicking game before he starts making schedule demands.
