Wait so ESPN is running stoies about Texas Tech falling apart without Sorsby and I just have to laugh. That kid bounces from Indiana to Texas Tech and now he is gone again and the whole program is in shambles. This is what the portal and NIL have done to us. Back in the 1980s when Coach Dooley was building the program we did not have kids jumping ship every time things got hard. You committed to a school and you stuck it out through the tough times. That is how we built the foundation that led to the 1980 championship.
You watch what is happening at Oklahoma State with 50 portal guys coming in and Colorado with 43 and it just looks like free agency not college football. I remember when we would identify a kid from Valdosta or Thomasville in the 10th grade and we would build a relationship with his family over three years. We watched him play in the state playoffs and we knew his mama and his granddaddy. Now these kids are renting their talents out to the highest bidder every December. The spring portal window got eliminated starting this year and that is the best thing the NCAA has done in decades but it is too little too late.
We landed a nice tight end in Kaiden Prothro for the 2026 class and that is fine but I cannot get excited about recruiting rankings the way I used to. Half these kids will be somewhere else by the time they are sophomores anyway. The loyalty is gone and that is what made the old rivalries special. You knew the kid wearing the G on his helmet actually wanted to be a Bulldog not just the one who offered the best NIL package.
