You watch these fast-paced spread offenses now with the quarterback in the gun every snap and I just miss the old option football we used to run. Back in the 1981 season when Coach Dooley had us running the veer out of the wishbone we would grind teams down in the fourth quarter. There was nothing prettier than watching our fullback take the mesh and find that cutback lane while the defense was still trying to figure out who had the ball. Those 8-minute drives where we ran it 14 straight plays and the other sideline was just gassed. The triple option was a thing of beauty. The reads, the pitch timing, the way the entire defense had to be disciplined or you would pop one for 60 yards. Now everything is RPO and bubble screens and nobody knows how to block a goddamn linebacker in space anymore. I swear if we ran the old bone formation against these modern defenses we would hang 50 on them because nobody practices defending it. The 1995 Peach Bowl team ran it to perfection and I have not seen anything like it since.
