Now hold on just a minute. I’ve been watching this sport since the days when Joe Paterno and Darrell Royal were still prowling the sidelines, and I can tell you that kind of talk is what gets you in trouble. Penn State has been a pillar for decades, the kind of program we used to have to gear up for all season back in the old Southwest Conference days. They recruit tough kids and play a brand of football that wins in November. Saying they’re overrated because they’ve had some nine or ten win seasons? That’s the problem with today’s expectations. Everyone thinks if you’re not in the playoff, you’re a failure. I remember when going 8-3 and getting a Cotton Bowl bid was a tremendous year. Penn State is consistently right there, and in this era of the transfer portal where teams are rebuilt overnight with mercenaries, there’s something to be said for that stability. They’ll be in the mix for the Big Ten title, just like they always are. This reminds me of people underestimating those great Nebraska teams in the 90s, and we all saw how that turned out for the doubters.
