ESPN can keep ranking our offseason however they want but I keep thinking about the Iron Bowl in 1985 when Van Tiffin drilled that 52-yarder to beat Auburn 25-23. That was a rivalry game that meant something because both teams built their programs the old way, through discipline and walk-ons and guys who bled their school colors. Now we got Oklahoma and Texas on the schedule and ESPN acts like that replaces what we had with Auburn and Tennessee. Nothing replaces the Third Saturday in October when we played Tennessee at Legion Field with the cigars and the smoke and the whole stadium shaking. You cannot manufacture that history no matter how many portal players you bring in or how much NIL money you throw around. The real rivalries are what made this sport great and we are watching them get watered down every single year.
