People keep talking about Florida's new head coach and the brutal 2026 schedule like that's the story. It's not. The real story is that the Gators defensive scheme has been a bottom-tier mess for two straight years and nobody wants to admit the scheme itself is broken, not just the personnel.
Florida finished 92nd in defensive SP+ last season. That's not a talent problem when you're pulling top 15 recruiting classes. That's a scheme problem. The Gators ran a 3-3-5 hybrid that got absolutely shredded against any team with a power run game. SEC opponents averaged 5.2 yards per carry against that front. That's unacceptable.
The scheme required the secondary to play man coverage on islands while the linebackers flowed to the ball. Except the linebackers kept getting caught in traffic because the defensive line couldn't hold gaps. The result was gap integrity failures on almost every zone read. Texas A&M ran for 280 on them. Tennessee ran for 260. LSU hit 300.
Now the new staff comes in and everyone assumes the scheme just needs a fresh coat of paint. But the 3-3-5 requires specific personnel that Florida hasn't recruited for. You need a nose tackle who can eat double teams and two edge players who can set the edge in space. Florida has been recruiting 4-3 defensive ends and trying to make them stand up outside linebackers. It doesn't work.
The 2026 schedule has Georgia, Texas, and Tennessee all with power run games. If the new staff tries to run the same 3-3-5 without overhauling the personnel, those games are going to look exactly like last year. The fix isn't a new coach. The fix is admitting the scheme doesn't fit the roster and either recruiting to the scheme or changing the scheme to fit the roster.
Florida's 2027 recruiting class is sitting around 12th nationally which is fine but those kids are 18 months away from contributing. The defense that takes the field in September is gonna be the same guys who couldn't stop the run last year unless the new staff makes a schematic adjustment this spring. Everything else is noise until that gets fixed.
