Just saw Andy Staples and the crew talking about Kirby Smart and comparing him to Bear Bryant and Nick Saban. I love what Kirby has done for this program, two national titles and all that, but let me tell you something about the 1981 team under Coach Dooley. We went 10-2 that year and beat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Dooley did it with walk-ons and two-star kids from south Georgia cotton towns. He did not have the transfer portal or NIL money. He had a chalkboard and a whistle. Kirby is a great coach, one of the best we have ever had, but the game has changed so much that you cannot even compare the eras anymore. Dooley built programs with his bare hands. These guys today are just managing money and egos.
