The Florida Gators defensive scheme talk is getting stale because everyone keeps looking at the wrong numbers. This unit finished 63rd in defensive SP+ last season and the narrative is stuck on the same old complaints about the secondary. But the real issue was the Gators ranked 98th in yards per play allowed on standard downs. That means the defense consistently failed to force offenses into obvious passing situations on third and long. Get the opponent to third and 6 or more and suddenly the Florida pass rush had a chance to pin their ears back. But when you are giving up 5.8 yards per play on first and second down the whole scheme falls apart. The front seven needs to be more disruptive early in the down sequence. Per PFF the Gators had the 11th highest missed tackle rate in the SEC last season and that is where scheme execution breaks down. You cannot run complex blitz packages if your linebackers are whiffing on basic gap fits. The new defensive staff needs to simplify the assignments and let the athletes play downhill. Stop trying to get cute with simulated pressures when you do not have the fundamentals locked in yet. The talent is there but the structure has to match the personnel.
