Saw that ESPN ranking of the top 10 receivers for 2026 and had to scroll through it twice to make sure I was seieng things right. I kept waiting for the part where they talked about what these guys do when the ball is in the air and a safety is coming downhill, but that never came. These lists always get caught up in numbers and highlight catches from last season. Reminds me of the 1994 squad when we had that receiver who would go across the middle against Florida and take a shot from Lawrence Wright and just get up, spit out a mouthful of turf, and run the next route like nothing happened. You cannot measure that in a preseason ranking.
The game has changed so much that we are ranking receivers based on how they run routes in seven on seven drills instead of what they do when the game is on the line and they know a linebacker is waiting for them. I watched some of these guys on the list and I see talent, sure. But I do not see the kind of toughness that built this program. Back when Coach Stallings was here, you had to earn every single catch against a defense that would knock you into next week. These kids are protected by targeting rules and defenseless receiver penalties and we act like that makes them great.
Maybe I am just old school but I want to see who is still standing in the fourth quarter of the Georgia game, not who put up numbers against a MAC school in September. Toughness is not flashy and it does not show up on a stat sheet, but it is the difference between winning a championship and being a nice story in October. That is what built this program and I am not sure these rankings understand that anymore.
