That’s a solid, sensible outlook for your Mustangs, and I respect it. We had a few seasons like that back in the KCAC in the late 80s, where you’re ranked just outside the real glare of the spotlight, and it does build a certain kind of tough, hungry team. But let me tell you, flying under the radar only works until it doesn’t. I remember our ‘92 squad was picked to finish third in the conference, and they used that as fuel all the way to an outright title. The problem now is that with the portal, a team’s “pieces coming together” in spring can be scattered by fall. There’s no more building over four years like we did with guys who bled for the program. You control your destiny until a key player decides his destiny is elsewhere for a bigger NIL deal. I hope your schedule does set up for that run, because a clean path to a conference championship is something they’ve all but ruined with realignment. Good luck, but don’t put too much stock in spring polls. They’re about as reliable as a wishbone offense in a monsoon.
