I got to thinking about when I saw that CBS Sports piece about six straight unique Big 12 champions? I got to thinking about the old stadium. Not the new one with all the suites and the fancy video board. I mean Amon G. Carter Stadium back when it had that old-school bowl shape and you could feel the concrete shake when we got a stop on third down. I remember sitting in the east side bleachers during the 1994 season when we opened against North Carolina and it was hotter than blazes and the metal benches would burn your legs through your jeans. We used to get there four hours early just to watch the band warm up and the smell of burnt brisket from the tailgate lots would drift up over the stands. You could hear every single play from the field bceause the place was so compact. There was no Jumbotron telling you when to make noise. You just knew. When we got that big win over Texas in 1995 and the goalposts came down I swear the whole stadium was bouncing. The new place is nice and all but it does not have the same soul. It does not have that crack in the concrete by section 14 where the old men would spit their tobacco juice. Those were real Saturdays. Now the place is full of people checking their phones during timeouts. Give me the old bowl any day.
