Everybody sitting around analyzing the $11.2M assistant pool and the recruiting rankings and completely missing the forest for the trees. The single most important thing to come out of this offseason was Scott Stricklin going on record and publicly backing Jon Sumrall's character during that coaching search. That is not nothing. That is the kind of organizational alignment that has been missing from this program since Urban Meyer left. You need the AD and the head coach genuinely on the same page or the whole thing crumbles from the inside within two years.
Sumrall walked into a situation where the previous regime had completely lost the locker room and the roster was bleeding talent through the portal. DJ Lagway leaving hurts but that was already in motion before Sumrall even signed his contract. The guy had to rebuild the entire defensive identity from scratch while also convincing offensive players that the scheme was going to actually work in the SEC. That is a monumental task for a first-year Power Four head coach.
The early returns on the defensive staff hires are promising. The $11.2M investment signals that Florida is not messing around with bargain-bin assistant salaries anymore. But the real test comes in August when we see if this team can actually tackle, take the ball away, and stop the run. Florida ranked 97th in red zone touchdown rate last season and that is not a talent problem, that is a culture and scheme problem. Sumrall has the pedigree from Troy to fix that.
Mark my words: by November this team will be top five in the SEC in scoring defense and people will look back at the Stricklin endorsement as the moment everything shifted. Florida is sleeping. Wake up.
