Just saw that David Hale piece ranking all 138 quarterback rooms and I have to laugh. This man has us sitting middle of the pack again in that 138-team breakdown. Back in the 1992 season we won the whole thing with a quarterback who had never started a college game before September and nobody was ranking us anywhere because rankings did not matter in June. You earned the field by August. Now every national writer wants to slot us in some tier based on spring practice clips and transfer portal rumors.
I remember sitting in Legion Field in the old days watching us break in a new quarterback every couple years and it did not matter because Coach Stallings built a program that could win with a game manager. We did not need a Heisman candidate under center. We needed a kid who could hand off to the runnning backs and not lose the game. Now we got a portal-heavy offensive line that has to gel by September and every talking head is already writing us off. This is the same program that lost five starters to the NFL Draft last month and nobody wants to talk about the young kids stepping up.
Let them sleep on us. They slept on us in 1992 too.
