Calling it now: the national media's offseason grades for Florida are going to look completely foolish by November. ESPN can rank every Power 4 team's portal and recruiting haul all they want, but they keep missing the actual story with this program. Florida Gators went out and hired a head coach who won at a Group of Five program with a defensive identity that translates directly to the SEC. That hire alone shifts the entire trajectory of this roster.
The portal losses and the 2026 class sitting outside the top 10 are distractions. What actually matters is that this coaching staff has a track record of developing defensive talent and the SEC is still a league where defense wins. Florida Gators gave up 28 points per game last season and still won 8 games. That number drops to 21 or lower with this staff's scheme and suddenly you're looking at a 10-win team in a conference that has no clear dominant force right now.
Everybody wants to point at Oregon's five 5-stars or Georgia's TE haul. Fine. Florida Gators has a coach who has already proven he can win with less talent and develop players into NFL draft picks. By the time the 2027 year closes and this staff has a full recruiting calendar, the gap in those rankings will shrink dramatically. The foundation is set. The grade will take care of itself.
