Everyone screaming about USC not having a single five-star in the 2027 class needs to actually read the ESPN scouting reports on how these prospects fit. The staff is not just chasing stars for the 247 composite flex, they are targeting specific players who fit the scheme and the culture. I have been tracking this class since the dead period and the crystal ball movement tells me we are in on guys who might not be five-stars on the On3 consensus but will absolutely play like them in this system.
Look at the board right now. There are 23 five-stars total in the 2027 year per ESPN and the staff has prioritized exactly three of them for official visits this summer. That is intentional. They are not going to waste bag money on a kid who wants to play in a completely different scheme just to say they landed a five-star. The portal has changed everything anyway. You can grab a proen five-star talent out of the portal every winter now and skip the recruiting drama entirely.
The noise I am hearing from sources close to the program is that the staff is comfortable with where the class sits at No. 11 because they know the 2026 season will do the recruiting for them. If the team wins early and looks legit on the field, those five-star croots who are currently soft commits to Oregon and Texas will start taking those OVs to USC in the fall. That is how this works. You build the foundation with high-floor four-stars and then you flip the elite guys once the product on the field sells itself.
I would rather have a class full of kids who fit the staff's vision than a bunch of five-star divas who will hit the portal the second they do not start as freshmen. The 247 composite ranking right now does not matter. What matters is who shows up in January and actually plays.
