Scrolled through that ESPN offseason rannking and I got about three paragraphs in before I remembered something. You remember when we used to measure an offseason by how many kids showed up for voluntary 6am runs in the August heat? Not by how many portal shopping sprees we won. The 2005 squad that went 11-1 and took us to that Houston Bowl didn't have a single portal guy on the roster. We found kids from the Texas high school ranks who wanted to wear the purple and fight for a Southwest Conference legacy. Now they grade us on NIL valuations and transfer classes like we are building a fantasy roster. Makes me miss the old days when you earned your snaps in July workouts not in a contract negotiation.
