You want to talk about positions of need for us and everyone is looking at the wrong side of the ball. All I hear is how we need to stack defensive backs and get after the quarterback. Sure, fine, whatever. But the real position of need nobody wants to say out loud is running back. And I don't mean just adding bodies. I mean finding a true bellcow who can carry this offense when the passing game hits a lull. We have been running a committee approach for years now and it works in spurts but when you need four yards on third and three in Big Ten traffic against a stacked box, you need a guy who punishes the line of scrimmage. We have finesse backs who can catch and run in spce. We do not have the guy who makes a safety think twice about filling the gap. That is what I am watching in this 2027 year and in the portal. We need a back who can pass protect on third down and then eat clock in the fourth quarter. The staff has done well with skill positions in the passing game but the ground game identity is still a question mark. I see Oregon stacking five 5-stars and they have a running back room that physically overwhelms people. Georgia always has that 230 pounder who falls forward. Texas has the same. We need to find that guy. It is the missing piece in this offense and nobody wants to admit it because the passing numbers look pretty. But watch the tape from last season. Watch how many drives stalled because we could not get a push on early downs. That is the position of need. Not flashy. Not a 5-star wideout. A grown man running back who punishes defenses in November. That is what I am tracking this summer.
