Just saw the ESPN draft confidential piece where college coaches broke down surprise moves and sleeper picks. And all I can think about is how the NFL just spent three days picking apart rosters built on talent evaluation while Florida Gators is sitting here ignoring the most predictive stat in the sport.
Turnover margin. The Gators finished -7 last season. Ranked 112th nationally. That is not a bad luck number. That is a fundamental problem with how the ball is being handled on both sides. You cannot win games when you give away possessions at that rate and take almost nothing back.
The math is brutal. Florida forced only 15 turnovers all season while giving it away 22 times. That -7 margin means the Gators lost the possession battle by nearly half a turnover per game. Over a 12 game schedule, that is basically spotting every opponent an extra drive.
Look at the teams that actually won last season. Indiana forced 28 turnovers. Ohio State was at +12. Even Georgia, who had an off year by their standards, was +6. The correlation between turnover margin and wins is stronger than almost any other stat in the sport.
The coaching staff needs to make ball security the single point of emphasis from now until September. Every drill, every scrimmage, every film session. If the Gators can get to even neutral in turnover margin, that is worth at least two more wins based on the data from the last five seasons.
