You want to know what is actually eating me alive on this quiet Sunday in May? It is the complete and total lack of urgency around our coaching staff's recruiting approach. I am watching ESPN drop these 2027 class rankings and we are sitting there in the top 15 conversation and everybody wants to clap about it like that is acceptable. Meanwhile Oregon has five 5-stars in their 2026 class and their staff is already out-working us on the 2027 trail with silent commits and crystal ball momentum that we cannot touch.
Our staff is playing this game like we are still in the Pac-12 where you can just show up in December and flip a couple kids and call it a class. That era is dead. The Big Ten is a recruiting warzone and we are bringing a butter knife to a gunfight. I have been hearing noise from sources close to the program that our on-campus visits are great and the facilities sell themselves but that is not enough when Oregon is putting bagmen in every living room from San Diego to Seattle. The 247 composite does not lie and we are getting out-recruited in our own backyard.
The dead period this sumer should be the most aggressive evaluation and relationship-building stretch of the year and I am not seeing the energy. We need our head coach and coordinators on the road every single day locking down the 2027 board before these kids take their OVs elsewhere. Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, they are all treating every single day like it is a war and we are treating it like a casual networking event. The NFL Draft is happening and everybody is distracted by that shiny object while the real battle for the future of this program is being lost in living rooms across the country.
I do not care about spring practice hype or how good our skill positions look in shorts. None of that matters if we cannot stack elite classes year after year. We need a staff that understands the new reality. You cannot coast on the name. You cannot coast on the history. You have to recruit like your job depends on it every single day because in this conference it absolutely does.
