Just saw that ESPN piece on Colton Nussmeier committing and I am happy to land a good pocket passer, I really am. But you know what nobody talks about anymore? The beauty of a well run option offense. I miss watching us get under center and having the fullback read the linebackers and the quarterback pulling that ball at the last second. Coach Goff ran that midline option in the late 80s with Lars Tate and it was a thing of beauty, pure poetry in motion. You had to have a tough quarterback who could take a hit and a fullback who understood the mesh point. Now everything is shotgun and RPOs and these kids dont even know what a triple option looks like. I remember watching Herschel run the option pitch against Florida in 1980 and it was just football the way God intended it. The defense had to account for every single player on the field. You couldnt just sit back in zone coverage and wait for the quarterbback to throw it. The portal kids coming in now probably never even ran a true option play in high school. Nussmeier looks like a fine prospect but I hope our coaches still teach the fundamentals of option football in practice. You need that threat in your back pocket for third and short.
