Back in the 80s, you had to win your conference and earn your way. A 9-3 record meant you weren't elite, period. I watched the Gators in the old SEC, and three losses meant you were watching the Citrus Bowl, not the title game. The data you love is what's wrong with the sport today. A top-5 win is nice, but real champions don't drop three games. This isn't complicated.
