Can someone explain why nobody is talking about what special teams actually cost Florida the last two seasons? I keep seeing the ESPN offseason grades and the portal analysis and everyone wants to talk about the offensive line or the QB situation but the data tells a completely different story about what sunk this team in tight games.
Florida ranked 87th nationally in punt return average last season. That is not a unit that puts you in favorable field position, that is a unit that actively makes every drive start from inside the 25. When you combine that with a kickoff coverage unit that gave up 22.4 yards per return, you are essentially spotting every opponent a full possession worth of field position over the course of a game. The math on that is brutal. Take a team that lost three games by a combined 14 points and ask yourself how many of those margins disappear if the special teams unit is even average.
The kicker situation has been quietly disastrous too. Florida converted just 73 percent of field goal attempts inside 40 yards last season. That is not a kicking problem, that is a confidence problem that bleeds into every fourth down decision the coaching staff makes. When you cannot trust your kicker from 38 yards, you start going for it on fourth and short from plus territory and that changes the entire offensive calculus. The 2024 season had the same issue with a 69 percent conversion rate inside 40. Two years of below 75 percent from that range is program-altering bad.
ESPN can rank the offseason however they want but the special teams coordinator hire might be the single most important move Sumrall made this winter. The Gators have not had a top 40 special teams unit since 2020. That is a half decade of giving away hidden yardage in a conference where every game comes down to a handful of plays. Iowa has made an entire identity out of winning the field position battle and they have won 10 games doing it.
The 2027 recruiting class is great and the portal additions are flashy but if the punt coverage team still gives up 12 yards a return in September none of it matters. Florida has the athletes to be top 30 in special teams SP+ if the scheme is right. That alone flips two losses minimum.
