Everyone saying you can fix special teams with "just get a better punter" is missing the real problem. Florida ranked 97th in punt return average at 6.2 yards per return and gave up a blocked punt returned for a touchdown against Texas A&M. That's not a punter issue, that's a scheme and personnel failure across all four phases. Jon Sumrall is paying his assistants $11.2 million combined this year so there is zero excuse for the same broken punt return unit and kick coverage that cost the Gators field position all season. The SEC average on punt returns last year was 8.9 yards. Florida was nearly 3 yards below that. You can't start drives inside your own 25 every possession and expect to compete in this league. If the new staff doesn't make special teams a priority from day one of summer workouts, the same problems will show up in September.
