Really gets me about all this CSC and 24-team playoff talk? The whole foundation of loyalty in this sport has just evaporated. I watch Oklahoma State bring in 50 transfers and Colorado haul in 43 and I think back to the 1998 squad we built with high school kids who committed on a handshake and stayed through the bad years. We had walk-ons who would have taken a bullet for this program and now kids are shopping their talents like they are at a swap meet. The portal has tturned college football into a free agency circus and nobody seems to care.
I remember when a player signed with TCU and that meant something. You bled purple through the losing seasons and you celebrated twice as hard when we finally got to a bowl game. Now a kid has one bad practice and he is in the portal by Tuesday. The elimination of the spring window was supposed to help but it just made the winter window even more insane. Every program is just buying a new roster every year and calling it a rebuild.
The Big 12 coaches are all voting for a 24-team playoff and I get it, I really do. More access for our league after years of being left out. But you cannot tell me that expanding the playoff is going to fix the fact that half these rosters will be different every single season. We used to build programs. Now we just assemble collections of mercenaries and hope they gel by October. Coach Sullivan would have walked into the locker room and told half these kids to go find the door if they were not committed. And I miss those days more than I can say.
