Kirby Smart saying the Big Ten has an edge over the SEC is just coachspeak for "Florida Gators need to schedule better non-conference games." Look at those schedule rankings CBS Sports just dropped. Texas and Oklahoma have two of the toughest 2026 schedules in the entire country. That's not a sign of a weaker conference, that's a sign that the SEC is still cannibalizing itself every single week while the Big Ten gets to pad records against Purdue and Northwestern.
The real story here is that the SEC's top tier is deeper than the Big Ten's despite what the offseason narratives say. Georgia, Texas, Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss all return enough to be playoff threats. Meanwhile the Big Ten has Ohio State, Oregon, and then a massive drop-off to Penn State and Michigan who both lost significant NFL talent.
Smart knows the SEC's ceiling is higher. He's just managing expectations after losing all those draft picks. The SEC still produced more first-rounders this week. That gap isn't closing.
