Three years. THREE YEARS since the spring portal window was the wild west and we actually knew how to work it. Now they eliminate it completely and everybody is supposed to just sit on their hands until December? That is great for the programs who already have their 2026 class locked in and their roster sttled. But we are sitting here in the summer dead period with the 2027 recruiting rankings out and ESPN has us in that top 15 conversation which is fine for this early but the portal is where the real roster construction happens now.
The winter window is going to be absolute chaos. Every single kid who thinks they should be starting somewhere is going to hit that button the second it opens. And the eliminated spring window means no more of those "spring ball didn't go my way" flips. No more April surprises. Everything is compressed into one massive feeding frenzy in December and January. Programs like Oklahoma State who brought in 50 transfers under Eric Morris basically had to do it in one shot because the spring window is gone. That is insane roster management.
What this means for us specifically is that Lincoln Riley and the staff have to be absolutely certain about every scholarship slot by the time the 2026 season ends. No more "we will see what we need in the spring" approach. You have to project your depth chart for the entire next season before the previous one is even over. And if you guess wrong on a position group, you are stuck with that hole until the next winter window opens twelve months later.
The other side of this is that recruiting high school kids becomes even more critical. If you cannot fix your roster in the spring anymore, you better be developing your own guys. The days of taking a flyer on a late spring transfer to plug a hole are over. Every miss in evaluation hurts twice as bad now. I am watching the 2026 class rankings and seeing Oregon with five 5-stars and thinking about how that depth is going to pay off when the winter window hits and they do not have to scramble for starters.
The SEC and Big Ten are going to dominate the winter portal window even harder now because they have the NIL infrastructure to make immediate decis...
