Florida ranked 97th in punt return average last season at 6.2 yards per return and nobody is talking about how that single stat loses games. You cannot win in the SEC when your special teams unit is giving away 10-15 yards of field position every single drive.
The $11.2M assistant pool is great but if Sumrall and his staff don't fix the punt return and kick coverage units it won't matter what the offense does. Florida was also bottom 30 in punt return defense allowing 11.4 yards per return. That's a 5 yard swing on every exchange.
Calling it now - Florida will jump at least 40 spots in special teams SP+ this season simply because Sumrall actually prioritized the third phase. The previous staff treated special teams like an afterthought and the numbers prove it.
