Just saw ESPN put out their Big 12 preview calling Texas Tech the team to beat and I am sitting here wondering when the last time we saw a Gary Patterson defense that actually intimidated anybody. Back in the 2009 season when we went to the Fiesta Bowl, we had a defense that would have made those Red Raider quarterbacks think twice about stepping onto the field. Now we got this new coordinator and I keep hearing about how we are reloading on that side of the ball but I need to see it before I believe it. Coach Patterson built that 2010 Rose Bowl squad on the backs of walk-ons and three-star kids who played like they had something to prove. These portal transfers come in for a season and bounce out the second they get a better NIL offer somewhere else. You cannot build a championship defense that way. I remember when we held Utah to zero points in the 2008 season and that Utes team had Brian Johnson at quarterback running the show. That was a defense that knew the system iside and out. Now we got kids learning new playbooks every spring because half the roster turns over every winter. You cannot tell me this is the same program that went 12-0 in 2010 and punched people in the mouth. I will believe it when I see it on the field this fall.
