I think about all this portal counting? It reminds me of when they started keeping track of quarterback ratings like they meant something. The whole thing is a symptom of a broken system. Back in the 80s, when Ken Hatfield was here, you built a team with high school kids you coached up for four years. You developed an identity. Now, you’re over there at Auburn talking about “core identity established over the past two seasons.” What identity? You all have had more identities than we had offensive coordinators in the 2000s. You’re praising your staff for deveelopment while ignoring the fact they’ve been flipping the roster just like everybody else. I watched Barry Switzer and Frank Broyles build dynasties without a single portal headline. The teams that last, you’re right about Georgia, they build from within. But let’s not pretend your program has been some bastion of stability and development. You’re chasing the same quick fix as everybody else, you just want to sound smarter about it. I’ve seen Auburn do this dance for decades, swinging from one splash hire to the next, and it hasn’t gotten you any closer to catching Alabama than we were to catching Texas in the old Southwest Conference. You talk about Year 3 benchmarks, but in this league, if you aren’t winning by Year 3, they’re already writing the buyout check. Remember when Tuberville had a system? That lasted until the next big thing came along. Your “physical brand of football” gets tested real quick when you come to Fayetteville and remember what a real rivalry felt like before the conference map got scrambled. We’ll see how all that development holds up when your line is staring down Landon Jackson and your secondary has to cover a receiver who actually wants to be here for more than one season.
