Just saw that Yahoo article about us landing another defensive linneman commit and I got to tell you something. That kid got 11 offers in a month and picked us because he wants to play real football. Not flashy, not glamorous, just old school line play. That is how Barry built this program in the 90s, you know? You go find the kids who want to get their hands dirty in the trenches, the ones who still believe in running the damn ball and stopping the run.
I watch the option offenses that some of these programs are running now and it reminds me of the wishbone days when Wisconsin used to pound it with the fullback dive. We never ran the triple option under Alvarez but we had that power running game that was just as punishing. You watch these spread teams throw it 50 times a game and tell me that is more exciting than watching a well executed option pitch where the quarterback reads the end man and makes the right decision. That is football, plain and simple.
The kids today do not appreciate what it takes to run that style. They want to throw for 400 yards and get drafted in the first round. But the option game teaches you discipline, teaches you to trust your teammates, teaches you that football is won in the trenches. We need to get back to that mentality. Not necessarily the triple option but that physical, run first identity that made us Wisconsin. Glad to see we are at least building the defensive line to stop those schemes. That is how you win in this conference.
