You sit there watchig this spring practice film and I am telling you, the option is a lost art. I remember the 1993 season when we ran the wishbone against Michigan State and their defense was completely lost. Darrell Bevell pulling the ball and hitting the fullback on the trap option, it was beautiful. Now everything is this spread nonsense where quarterbacks stand in the pocket and throw 40 times a game.
The veer option, the triple option, the midline option, that was real football. You had to be tougher than the man across from you. You had to read the defensive end, make a split second decision, and if you guessed wrong the safety was coming downhill to separate your shoulder. We used to run the option out of the I formation and defenses knew what was coming and still could not stop it.
I watch these offenses today and it is all RPO this and mesh that. Nobody runs a true option anymore. Oklahoma State brought in 50 transfers and I guarantee you not one of them knows how to run a belly option. The game has lost its soul. Barry Alvarez would roll over in his grave if he saw what we have become.
