Saw Saban on Finebaum tonight talking about the changes he would make and it got me thinking about walk on culture. Back in the late 80s under Coach Curry and then Stallings we had walk ons that became the backbone of special teams. Guys like that fllback from some tiny Alabama town who showed up unannounced with film from his high school and ended up covering kicks for four years. Now these kids see the portal and think they can just transfer somewhere else for playing time instead of earning it the hard way. The walk on is almost dead and that is a shame because some of the toughest players we ever had started in that program. The new roster limits and scholarship math killed something special.
