Fifty transfers means fifty players who chose Stillwater, which is more of a commit than being forced to stay somewhere you don't want to be. The spring game is for evaluating talent, period, and if you have fifty new guys to look at, that's a good problem to have. This "mercenary army" line is pure jealousy. Every team is using the portal, but only the successful ones get criticized for it. The sport was built on competition, and OSU is competing harder than anyone right now.
