Just saw the ESPN 100 days piece mention Florida's red zone issues from last season but they didn't go deep enough. The Gators ranked 87th nationally in red zone touchdown percentage at 56.7%. That is genuinely terrible for any Power Four program, let alone one trying to compete in the SEC.
The problem wasn't the scheme or the playcalling as much as people want to blame. Florida averaged 4.8 yards per carry inside the 20 which is actually solid. The breakdown came on third and fourth down in the red zone where the Gators converted at just 38%. That is a quarterback decision making problem and a personnel issue.
The new QB competition this spring has to be about who can process faster in tight windows. Florida cannot afford another season leaving 10 to 14 points on the field every other game because they settle for field goals inside the 20. The margin between 6-6 and 9-3 is almost always red zone efficiency.
