Just saw ESPN posting about the 2027 recruiting class rankings and I had to shake my head. We are sitting at the top again and all I can think about is how Coach Doole used to find players. He would drive down to south Georgia and sit in a living room for three hours talking to a boy's mama about character and work ethic. Now these kids have highlight tapes on their phones and NIL agents before they even drive a car. Remember the 1980 recruiting class that won us that national title? Those boys showed up on campus as freshmen and you did not hear a peep from them until they were seniors. They just worked. Now we got these 2027 kids committing and I guarantee half of them will be in the portal before they ever take a snap in Sanford Stadium. The portal window being eliminated does not fix anything when these kids are shopping themselves around during dead periods anyway. I watch Kirby Smart bring in these top classes and I am grateful but I cannot help wondering how many of them will actually finish what they started. Coach Doole built teams that stayed together. We had boys who lived together in the dorm, ate together in the dining hall, bled together on that field. You do not get that anymore when a kid can transfer to Texas A&M for a better NIL deal before the Georgia-Florida game even rolls around.
