Calling it now: Florida's defensive scheme under Sumrall is going to look nothing like what people expect from a guy who built his reputation at Troy and Tulane. The narrative that he's just a "G5 defensive guru who runs a simple system" is about to get blown up by September.
The Stricklin interview from spring basically confirmed what the film from Sumrall's last two stops already showed. This defense is multiple in a way that Florida hasn't been since the 2019 season. The Gators ranked 87th nationally in defensive havoc rate last year, which is inexcusable for a program with this talent base. Sumrall's units at Troy finished top 25 in havoc rate both seasons. That's not a coincidence.
Here's the specific thing that's going to change. Florida played almost 65% of snaps in nickel last season and got destroyed on the ground against 12-personnel. Sumrall's base defense at Tulane was a 3-3-5 that shifted into multiple looks pre-snap. The Gators allowed 4.8 yards per carry against 12-personnel sets in 2025, which ranked 112th nationally. Sumrall's scheme uses the extra defensive back to play run fits at the second level rather than just dropping into coverage.
The personnel fits this perfectly. Florida has the safety depth to run the 3-3-5 without getting gashed. The linebacker room is built for speed over size now. The edge players are gonna be asked to two-gap less and attack gaps more aggressively. Last year the Gators gave up 5.2 yards per play on standard downs, which is bottom-third SEC numbers. Sumrall's defenses have held opponents under 4.5 yards per play on standard downs in three of the last four seasons.
The recruiting surge the Yahoo piece mentioned is directly tied to this scheme. Kids want to play in a defense that creates negative plays and gets them on film for the NFL. Florida had 52 tackles for loss last season. Sumrall's Troy team had 87 in 2023. That's a 67% increase in disruption.
By week 4 of this season, people are gonna be talking about Florida's defense the same way they talk about Georgia's front seven. The blueprint is there. The staff is executing the recruiting side. Now it's about installing the scheme through summer workouts and fall camp. The SEC isn't ready for what Sumrall is building.
