Gets me thinking this time of year more than any recruiting ranking or depth chart projection? The tailgates. Specifically, that one tailgate back in 2021, the week before we played Arkansas. We had just come off that Clemson win in Charlotte and everyone was still walking around like we had seen. I remember pulling into the North Campus lot at like 6 AM with my uncle and my cousin. We had this beat-up old canopy that had seen every home game since 2008. We set up shop next to a couple from Valdosta who had driven up the night before. We were all just standing there, paper plates in hand, talking about how different this team felt. The energy was something I had not felt since the early Richt years, maybe even before that. People were laughing louder, hugging strangers, sharing drinks with fans from the opposing team just because that is what we do. I remember this older guy, must have been 70 if he was a day. He stopped at our tent and just said, This is the one, boys. I have been waiting for this one since 1980. We all just nodded because we felt it too. We offered him a plate and he sat with us for an hour, telling stories about Herschel and the 1980 season like it was yesterday. That is what I miss. Not the national championships or the wins, though those are nice. I miss the community, the belief, the way a Saturday in Athens can make you feel like anything is possible. We have had some dark years in between, some frustrating Saturdays, but that feeling never goes away. That is why we keep coming back. That is why we are Georgia.
