Just read that ESPN piece about the portal killing QB competitions and it's missing the real story for Florida specifically. The Gators QB efficiency numbers last season were sitting around 60th nationally in QBR and people want to blame the quarterback alone. That's lazy analysis when the offensive line ranked 95th in pass block win rate and the WR room dropped 12% of catchable targets.
The portal argument falls apart when you look at what actually happened in Gainesville. Florida brought in portal QBs and still had a competition because nobody separated themselves. The efficiency numbers tell you the system and supporting cast were the problem, not the talent at quarterback. When your pass protection gives up pressure on 38% of dropbacks, no QB is going to post elite numbers regardless of portal investment.
What the national media refuses to acknowledge is that Florida's QB efficiency will improve naturally this year because the offensive line should be better with another offseason together. The Gators finished 87th in yards per attempt and that number doesn't fix itself with a portal splash. It fixes with continuity up front and a running game that keeps defenses honest.
The portal killed QB competitions at Alabama and Tennessee because those programs had established systems and elite supporting casts. Florida has neither right now. The Gators need to build the infrastructure before worrying about who takes the snaps.
