Scrolling through that ESPN 2027 class rankings drop and I keep refreshing the page hoping to see us crack the top 15 but we are barely hanging around the back end of the top 25 again. Meanwhile Ohio State and Oregon are stacking five-stars like they are collecting infinity stones and Notre Dame sits at 4 nationally with 18 top 300 prospects already locked in. Watching Oregon land Dylan Raiola out of the portal AND stack their 2026 class with five 5-stars while we are stuck in this dead period scrambling to hold onto commitments is getting old fast.
The Big Ten recruiting battles are absolutely brutal now. We used to own this state and the West Coast pipeline but now every single kid we target gets a bag from Oregon or Ohio State or even Washington who is suddenly sniffing the top 25 too. I keep hearing noise about a few 2027 croots taking OVs this weekend but the crystal balls are NOT moving our way yet and the 247 composite numbers tell the story. Our staff is working the portal hard but you cannot build sustained success without stacking elite high school talent year over year.
What worries me most is that the SEC and Big Ten are completely dominating the top of these rankings and we are stuck in the middle of the pack trying to fend off programs like Texas Tech and Cal who are suddenly recruiting at our level. The NIL revenue sharing cap is supposed to level things out but right now it feels like the bag game is only getting stronger for the proggrams already ahead of us. We need a huge summer push or we are gonna be fighting for scraps in this conference for years.
