Is anyone else watching the special teams film from spring practice and wondering what the hell the new staff is doing differently? Florida ranked 87th in special teams SP+ last season and that was with the old regime. I keep hearing about the $1.45 billion Swamp renovation changing wind patterns and how that supposedly helps kickers, but has anyone actually looked at the punt coverage numbers from the spring game? The gunners looked lost on the deep kicks and the return unit gave up two big plays that would have been touchdowns in a real game. The new punter has a big leg but his hang time is averaging 3.8 seconds based on the film I have seen, which is going to get destroyed against SEC returners like the ones at Georgia and LSU. I get that the focus is on the offense with the RB room and Kewan Lacy getting all the ESPN hype but field position wins games in this conference. Florida lost three games last year by a combined 11 points and special teams mistakes directly contributed to two of those losses. The new coordinator needs to show something in the fall or this is going to be the same story. The advanced numbers do not lie about this unit.
