I keep coming back to something when I see these ESPN offseason rankings grading us on portal hauls and recruiting class stars. What happened to the walk on who showed up to tryouts in August with nothing but a dream and a pair of clats? I remember back in the early 80s when coach Dooley would find some kid from a South Georgia farm town nobody ever heard of and that kid would end up being a special teams demon for four years. Now if a walk on doesn't get guaranteed playing time by the second week of fall camp he is in the portal before the leaves change. The NIL money has killed the whole idea of earning your stripes on the scout team. We used to have guys who would bleed for this program for three years before they ever saw the field on Saturday and they were proud of it. That culture is gone and I do not know if we ever get it back.
