You watch these programs bring in 40 and 50 transfers from the portal and I think about the walk-on tryouts we used to have in the early 90s. Guys like Jon Stinchcomb who showed up unrecruited and earned everything. That culture is gone. You used to have to prove yourself in the Georgia heat against guys who had been in the system for three years. Now a kid transfers in, gets handed a starting job because of what he did somewhere else, and the walk-on who has been busting his tail since January gets buried on the depth chart. The elimination of the spring portal window is the best thing the NCAA has done in years because at least now we get to see who actually wants to compete from January through April without half the roster jumping ship. But I still miss the days when a walk-on could become a captain and the transfers were the exception not the rule.
